Bao Down to The Chairman, Now Open in The Arts District
Buns for all.
Another day, another restaurant opening in the Arts District. This time it’s The Chairman, a San Francisco-born food truck-turned-brick-and-mortar retailer that has finally opened its second location in LA, reports the LA Times.
The Chinese-style steamed and baked bao specialist is the work of Josh Tang and chef Hiroo Nagahara. Tang, founder of the food truck management and operations company Mobi Munch, and Nagahara, former executive chef of Charlie Trotter’s Bar Charlie, began selling baos from a San Francisco-based food truck in 2010 before setting up shop in the Tenderloin district.
Their first venture in LA, The Chairman’s weathered storefront marked by a Mao Zedong-turned panda bear logo fits right in to the industrial surrounds. Inside, find baked or steamed buns filled with things like miso-glazed pork belly with turmeric pickled daikon and cola-braised pork with cabbage slaw. There’s even rice and noodle bowls, double-fried Kennebec fries, and yuzu-glazed chicken wings to boot.
Thirsty locals will have to stay tuned for beer and wine. For now, you can get your baos Tuesday to Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
